044: Maggie Minor on How to Design Your Space for Your Future Life

How do you create a home environment for success? Particularly if you’re someone who works remotely. As mentioned in our last episode with Victoria Mininger (Episode 43) we live in a time where everyone is on the go. Gone are the days where one is tied to the desk at a company for 40 plus years living in one city in one house in one part of the world.

With technology and the digital landscape creating more global opportunities, people are on the go. People go to where the jobs are and more times than not, that may mean having the flexibility to move at a company’s whim.

About 43% of employed Americans spent at least some time working remotely according to a Gallup Survey.

Whether you’re a full-time entrepreneur or in a 9-5 working a side hustle, you want to create a space that sets you up for success. And even if entrepreneurship isn’t in the cards for you right now, who wouldn’t want a space and place to be able to be more productive in other areas in your life like health and fitness or family pets? Really it comes down to what will make you happy and creating a space for that which is what we’re all about here at Simply Designed Life Podcast.

Our next guest is artist and designer Maggie Miner who is here to chat about how to decorate your space for the kind of life that you want.

What’s cool is she’s got a memoir Adventures of a Curious Sculptor which discusses her journey and how she sees design, so check it out on Amazon or below in the show notes. If you need help on how to prioritize to create a space for yourself, you can check out my book too, Fifty Shades of Simple: How to Prioritize in the Age of Information Overload. With spring on it’s way, this is the perfect time to a) declutter your space, and b) decorate it with insight from this week’s guest Maggie Minor.

Who is Maggie?

Maggie Minor believes that what we surround ourselves with has a profound affect on our subconscious and that by simply making a few changes in our home décor we can uplift ourselves and open up our mind to new possibilities. She is the founder of Maggie Minor Designs, a retail outlet with furniture and artwork paired in inspiring rooms for busy bold women like you.

In her former life, Maggie spent almost 15 years traveling the world…as a graduate student in Australia, a student and backpacker in Europe, a Peace Corps volunteer in Bulgaria and a humanitarian worker working in Asia and Africa. Her memoir, Adventures of a Curious Sculptor, recounts her long journey from adventurer to artist….and her appreciation for all of the beauty that surrounds us.

Quotes from Maggie

What came out of it was I wasn’t following my true path. You shouldn’t have to try so hard if you’re in alignment with who you are is what I realize in retrospect. It was awful, but I’m very grateful for it now. (7:24)

What I realized in talking with people is that they find art really intimidating. And in this conversation, what came out of it was an even deeper problem that they have is that they’re not decorating their homes to be in alignment with who they are. Like they’re not actually buying things they love. They’re just decorating to decorate. (9:35)

It’s really important to know yourself before you open your own business. It’s really important to get to know yourself while you are starting your business too. Because if your personal values aren’t aligned with your business, then everything is gonna seem hard. So I think personal growth, all the courses you can take, there’s so many great resources out there! I think they should be mandatory for any entrepreneur’s journey just because they’re so helpful.
