052: Annett Bone Pt. I: A Dancepreneur’s Inner Journey

The last month and a half have been filled with adventures and much learning. I’d gotten out of my comfort zone by participating in the PMx Competition at Podcast Movement, which is a Tedx style talk with a podcast focus. A big shout out to the organizers and participants I got to meet! While competitive, it was definitely more collaborative and I’m super thankful for both the opportunity and chance to connect with cool people!

There’s so much to share, and quite honestly I am currently figuring out how to break down all this goodness without the overwhelm. More details to come in another episode!

In the meantime, I’m excited to introduce the next guest to Simply Designed Life Podcast, Annett Bone. My conversation with Annett is broken down into two parts. In the first part, we discuss her entrepreneurship journey and how following her intuition was critical to getting into alignment with her goals.

In the second part, we talk about strategic learning, which I’m particularly excited about! Shiny object syndrome and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) are very real in this age of distraction. She gives some great tips on how to get focused enough to stay the course.

Before we dig in, if you haven’t done so already, please subscribe to the show. 1) You’ll be able to easily access the second part of the conversation once it goes live. 2) You’ll continue to receive the latest episodes–all from the convenience of your mobile phone!

Just select the Podcast App on your mobile phone, search for “Simply Designed Life Podcast” or “Lori Rochino” and press “subscribe” to receive the second part and more great episodes to come!

Who is Annett?

Annett Bone is the founder and host of The DancePreneuring Studio Podcast where she guides her listeners on a journey of transformation inspired by dance, life, and business. The podcast is a reflection of all the lessons learned after returning to dance after a 20-year hiatus.

Because she returned to her passion for dance after giving it up for 20-plus years, she is constantly putting herself in uncomfortable situations where she can grow.

She has a Bachelors Degree in Dance from the University of California Irvine, which at the time was ranked third in the nation for dance programs, behind Julliard and New York University.

When she’s not creating content or doing online marketing work, she can be found practicing yoga or checking out coffee shops other than Starbucks. Fun facts: 1) Korean is her first language. 2) She was once a fan club president for Puerto Rican boy band Menudo—popular back in the ’80s.

Quotes from Annett

Not every business model is for everyone and for someone to try to fit you into their box is not honoring to you and not honoring to them because everybody has a different path. (5:37)

In terms of the entrepreneurial journey, I didn’t honor the signals within myself, of what felt right, what didn’t feel right, what didn’t agree with my internal compass, and that’s one of the biggest mistakes I did. (6:18)

For me, that’s when things really started to change when I started to change on the inside, and things on the outside started to change—when I started focusing more on that. (12:57)

I just never thought that this audio thing would open up opportunities and also help me grow—like you said speaking in front of people and the immediate feedback—you’re like ‘Wow, I actually made a difference to this person.’ I don’t know what it was but it’s very gratifying knowing that you can have a positive effect on someone by just expressing what has gone on in your life and hopefully giving them something they could implement as well and I think that’s what it’s all about. (29:35)

What You’ll Learn

  • Annett’s background growing up with an entrepreneurial family who encouraged her to take the traditional route—go to college, get a job—which didn’t resonate with her.
  • It’s okay not to fit into other people’s idea of an entrepreneurial journey. Everyone has a different path.
  • There’s a lot of resources out there to help with the mindset for whatever journey you are on.
  • What helps with deciding which courses and mentorship to invest in is to ask yourself, “Is this ‘just in case’ or is this ‘just in time’? Does it directly relate towards an action or result that you want?”
  • How getting out of your comfort zone allows you to grow in different areas of life.
  • The podcast medium in comparison to video or written blog posts.
