5 Tiny House Tips You Can Use For Your Living Space
People choose to live in a tiny house for a variety of reasons. One includes the ability to pay for a house in full as opposed to being tied down to a traditional, 30-year mortgage. Another reason is to downsize their current possessions and live more intentionally after frustrations with the current work and spend model. Some people want to get their weekends back after ongoing home improvement projects that never seem to end.
Of course there are also other reasons like reducing environmental impact and spending quality time on relationships. While I applaud those who are able to radically downsize their possessions to a luggage’s worth of things, I don’t believe I’d be able to do it as a long-term solution. I do believe in taking some of their tips for standard-sized living spaces though.
Here are 5 tiny home hack ideas you can apply to your space:
1. Develop a minimalist mindset. Even if you have a bigger house, have a “tiny house” mindset in that you prioritize what you need and don’t need. Having less will allow you to focus on the people, things and activities that really matter in your life. By getting rid of what you don’t need, you also get rid of “distractions,” the things that need to be cleaned, maintained, updated, whatever. You buy up time when you let go of these things. Watch this Tedx Talk for inspiration on how two minimalists were able to pare down their possessions.
2. Maximize your current space with functional design elements. One way you could get creative about how you use your current space is by noticing where you put things when you come home. This can clue you in on what organization solutions or built-ins you may need. If you’re used to throwing all your stuff on a chair when you come home and it’s an eye-sore, maybe you need to look into creating built-in shelves or cubbies for yourself or each member of your family.
Maybe you need extra office space but don’t want the extra room. What if your kitchen table doubled as a desk? Need more inspiration? Grab an Ikea catalog or check out their website as they have LOADS of tips for utilizing a space. Many DIYers have adopted the Ikea hacks. Just look to Pinterest pages and google search “Ikea hacks” and you’ll see a lots of ideas.
3. Utilize your wall and ceiling space. The benefit of having a normal sized space is while you may not always have square footage, you could always make use of your wall and possibly ceiling space. Tiny home dwellers also use the space going UP and utilize every inch of space. Are there things you see on the floor or a cramped space that may be better utilized on a wall shelf or built-in? In a kitchen, you could get a magnetic strip to hang cutlery to a wall, or hang pots and pans from the ceiling like in these tiny homes. For a kid’s room, could you use a bunk bed instead of low to the ground bed and utilize the under bed space as a homework area. 4. Utilize outdoor space. Entertaining in tiny spaces can prove challenging, but if you’re lucky enough to have access to outdoor space, whether it be your back yard or a nearby park, that could potentially become an extension of your living space. With a table and some chairs, an outdoor space can be a dining or entertaining area. Or on a nice day kids could play with outdoor toys.
5. Realize the trade offs with kids’ stuff. Kids learn and grow all the time. They also regularly outgrow clothes and toys as they age. Tiny house dwellers would keep toys to a minimum. While you may not always be able to do this in a regular size space, maybe you could incorporate the 80/20 rule or something like it where you keep 20% of the toys that are played with 80% of the time. Gently used toys could go to consignment stores and unopened toys can be donated to Toys for Tots during the holiday season. Stress experiences over stuff, such as going to the park or pool in the summer time, or trip to the library or organic farm.
By utilizing these five simple tips, you can maximize space using tiny home techniques for almost any living space. This will allow you to save time on cleaning and maintaining a decluttered space and allow you to focus on your more important life priorities.
